How is the Bible arranged?

  • The Bible is divided into the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament is generally about events before Jesus Christ was born. The New Testament is generally about events after Jesus Christ was born.
  • The Old and New Testaments are divided into many books. For example, one of the books in the Old Testament is "Exodus," and one of the books in the New Testament is "John." An index of the books contained in the Bible is listed at the beginning of the Bible.
  • Each book is divided into chapters. The third chapter in the New Testament book of John is often displayed like this: John 3.
  • Each chapter is divided into verses. The sixteenth verse of the third chapter in the New Testament book of John is usually displayed like this: John 3:16. A series of verses may be shown as John 3:16-19.
